Our Kids Programs
CHAMPS AND LIONS
PROGRAMS.
Our youngest grapplers begin in the Champs Class, designed for children ages 4 to 6. Through structured movement, age-appropriate games, and positive repetition, they learn to listen, coordinate their bodies, and follow instructions — building the foundation every young athlete needs. Here in Richmond, TX, we see kids arrive timid and leave beaming.
The Lions Class serves ages 7 to 12 with real technique, competition awareness, self-defense application, and the kind of discipline that carries into every classroom in Fort Bend County. Both programs are subdivided by size and skill level so every child is always working with appropriately matched partners. Classes are coach-led, safe, and contain no strikes of any kind.
The skills they build on the mat follow them everywhere — into the classroom, into friendships, and into life.
The Benefits
WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL BUILD
01
Muscle Memory
Drilling movements until they become instinct builds motor skills that transfer to every physical activity your child does.
02
Hand-Eye Coordination
The intricate technique of BJJ develops spatial awareness and coordination beyond what most sports can offer.
03
Social Skills
Training with partners builds communication, empathy, and the ability to work with people of all backgrounds and skill levels.
04
Problem-Solving
Every roll is a puzzle. Kids learn to think under pressure, adapt to changing situations, and stay calm when challenged.
05
Bully-Proof Confidence
Children who know they can defend themselves carry themselves differently. The confidence is visible — and bullies notice it.
06
Self-Discipline
Structure, focus, and commitment to improvement. These habits form on the mat and show up at school and at home.
07
Respect
Every class begins and ends with a bow. Students learn hierarchy, gratitude, and how to treat teammates with dignity.
08
Competitiveness
For kids who want to compete, we prepare them well. For those who don’t, the drive to improve is competitive enough.
Parents Ask
THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS
Is BJJ safe for young children?
There are no strikes of any kind in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our children’s classes use structured, age-appropriate progressions designed specifically for young bodies and developing minds. The Champs class focuses entirely on movement and games — no submissions are taught at this level. Our coaches are trained to work with young children. Parents are always welcome to watch from the sidelines. Safety is built into every aspect of our curriculum at Renzo Gracie The Grove.
What age can my child start?
Our minimum age is 4 years old. The Champs class is for ages 4 to 6, while the Lions class is for children ages 7 to 12. Both programs are subdivided further by size and skill level, so your child is always working with appropriately matched partners in a safe, structured environment here in Richmond, TX.
Does my child need any experience?
Zero experience is required. The majority of our new students have never trained before, and that’s exactly where our coaches excel. They are experienced at working with complete beginners at every age level. The first class is always free so your child can try it before any commitment is made. No pressure, no obligation — just come and see if it’s a fit.
“
“The professor, Mike Ocampo, is great with the kids and makes the class a lot of fun. There is a ton of engaging activity the whole time and lots of hands on instruction. The whole leadership of the gym becomes like family in no time and makes you want to be at every class.”
